Why 145 mm Works for Rings
- Covers all standard women’s and men’s ring sizes in a single strip
- Works at copper and bronze clay shrinkage rates of 25–30%
- Works at silver clay shrinkage rates of 8–22%
- Plenty of margin for trimming and finishing the join
How to Measure for Your Ring Band
A ring band wraps the full 360° around the finger, so your finished band length equals your finger circumference. Because clay shrinks during drying and kiln firing, you need to start with a longer piece of clay than your finished size. Follow these steps:
- Measure your finger circumference snugly in mm (or use a ring sizer)
- Add 2–3 mm ease for comfort
- Multiply by the factor below to get your starting clay length (accounting for shrinkage)
| Clay Type | Shrinkage | Start with this much MORE clay | Multiply finished length by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fine Silver (e.g. PMC3, Art Clay) | 8–12% | ~10–14% longer | × 1.09–1.14 |
| Silver clay (higher shrink) | 15–22% | ~18–28% longer | × 1.18–1.28 |
| Copper clay | 20–28% | ~25–39% longer | × 1.25–1.39 |
| Bronze clay | 25–30% | ~33–43% longer | × 1.33–1.43 |
Example: Size M women’s finger (52 mm circumference) + 2 mm ease = 54 mm finished length. Using bronze clay at 30% shrinkage, start with 54 × 1.43 = ~77 mm of clay — well within the 145 mm mat. Even a men’s XL (68 mm) at 30% shrinkage needs only ~97 mm, leaving plenty of spare mat.
How to Use
- Apply a release agent to the mat before use
- Press your clay firmly onto the mat
- Peel away carefully to reveal the impression
- Use a strip/straight cutter to cut your desired shape
- Wrap around a ring mandrel at the correct size before drying
Compatible With
- Metal clay — fine silver, bronze, copper
- Polymer clay
- Air-dry clay
- ACS (Art Clay Silver)
Important Notes
- Always use a release agent to prevent sticking
- Please be aware that the pattern detail will appear smaller after firing — the higher the shrinkage rate of your clay, the more the design will reduce in size. This is normal and expected with all metal clays
- Not for food use
